Program Description:

Psychology of Religion and Spirituality

Italy, Summer 2018

Vatican Statues of apostles
This course will be the study of  religion and spirituality from a psychological (that is, scientific) perspective. The course will take place primarily in the Italian cities of Rome and Florence, which will provide the ideal backdrops to guide discussions on the cross-cultural ways that religion and psychology are intertwined, and current and historic psychological perspectives on religion and spirituality.

We will visit significant places of worship, including churches, mosques, synagogues and one Buddhist temple. We will also spend time touring these cities and discussing the ways that religious influences have guided culture in Italy and around the world, and students will have the unique opportunity to see works of art and historic landmarks in person that have been created through the influence of religion. The course will ask you to consider religion, spirituality, and private practices in a way that you may not have before. It will be a purely empirical course, meaning that we will not be discussing what religious view is right or wrong. Rather, we will discuss religious ideas and practices through the lens of different psychological fields.
